Here's How to Get Your Seller's Permit and Other permits and Registrations You May Need. Seller's Permit, LLC, DBA, Licenses & Tax IDs Requirements:




First decide on a business structure General Merchandise as a Sole Proprietor, LLC/Corp, or Partnership.


Note that each structure requires a filing. E.g., selecting an LLC, requires at least an LLC certificate, an LLC operating agreement, a business license and a federal tax ID number.

All General Merchandise Businesses need a , Business tax registration also called an occupation business License

Selling/Leasing or if wanting to buy or sell General Merchandise merchandise, food, equipment requires a Seller's Permit.

All General Merchandise Businesses Using a DBA doing business as name need a DBA Fictitious Business Name

Hiring General Merchandise Workers Requires a Federal EIN and a State Tax Number EIN

REQUIRED LICENSES Legal Structure Whether an online, home, store, concession stand or a mobile cart, you will need to first select among sole owner/proprietor, partnership, LLC or corporation, all of which also require a General Business License (not a specific license to your type of business) as well.

If your trade name is a business name other than your full personal legal name, you will need to file a DBA . For instance, your name is John Doe, and you do business as Best Widgets By John, the name must be registered with aDBA Biz Name because it is not your full legal name.

Also, note that whatever item that you sell or lease and it is an item that can be touched (i.e., tangible such as equipment, toys, merchandise, electronics, prepared food) requires a state sales tax ID ( Sellers Permit) to either buy or sell the items or products wholesale and or sell them retail. If you are hiring workers anytime soon, you will need a Federal EIN and a State EIN(employer identification number). Other instances that you will need a federal tax ID are: if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, and a corporation or anLLC.

You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other registrations, such as licenses, an assumed business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even one person, sole owner/proprietors working from home or just online can form a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to file a DBA.

Even though you are a home business you still need all permits and tax ID numberss like any other businesss.       If you sell anything hazardous such as chemicals you will need a special location for the merchandise.   Sometimes the county will ask for an inspection if you manufacture or store anything hazardous.   Merchandise is stored at home business location so it it is an insignificant amount it is ok but a lot of merchandise may need a storage location for a home business permit to be issued: Basement Home deliveries will occur regularly at home based business. Most cities will not allow too many deliveries so you need to either pick up your deliveries from UPS or limit the amount of trucks parking in front of you home:

Getting people to work for you within 30 days of starting your business subjects you having to get a Federal EIN and a State EIN (employer identification number). On the other hand, you will also need a federal tax ID are: if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, and a corporation or an LLC . You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other filings, such as permits, a fictitious business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even sole proprietor working from home or just online can set up a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to register the trade name with a dba because the LLC or Corporation name will be the legal name of the business.

Ido a couple of craft shows in North Carolina once a year, do I need a resale tax number?I can't seem to find my seller's permit number in my files on my computer ...is there a way to get a copy do I need a EIN if I have one in another state I am researching on what licenses are needed retail seafood sales. I would like sell handmade products ex. clothing, purses, shoes

Yes, you do because each time you sell anything you need to collect and pay sales taxes.  You also need a seller's permit to buy wholesale your craft supplies and items.

I obtained a seller's permit in the state of arizona, I'm selling clothing from a home-based business and I wanted to work with manufactures in California. Is the seller's permit transferable across state lines? What is the protocol for working with out of state manufactures and selling whole sale in-state.I have a seller's permit but misplaced the number. can you help?
