Even though you are a home business you still need all permits and tax ID numberss like any other businesss. Online business operated from home need to obtain a home occupation business permit and a fictitious business name if a DBA fictitious name is used to conduct businesss.     If you sell anything hazardous such as chemicals you will need a special location for the merchandise.   Sometimes the county will ask for an inspection if you manufacture or store anything hazardous.   Merchandise is stored at home business location so it it is an insignificant amount it is ok but a lot of merchandise may need a storage location for a home business permit to be issued: home office Make sure you do not have too many deliveries by truck to your home if this is a home business.

You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other filings, such as permits, a fictitious business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even sole proprietor working from home or just online can set up a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to register the trade name with a dba because the LLC or Corporation name will be the legal name of the business.

the business right now is only photo booth rentals but we would like to get into candy buffets as well so my question is what other licenses/permits would we need to get if we were selling candy?

Answer: For photography, you need a business license and a dba, llc or corporation. If you sell tangible photos like paper ones, you will need a seller's permit to buy the paper and sell the photos and charge taxes.
