How do I get a catering business in Shreveport, LA licensed and registered?

Ahmir wrote: “I want to register my BBQ trailer for my catering business.”

Hi Ahmir, congratulations on Smoked Out Meatz! Weddings, office lunches, and family celebrations always need food, and a caterer with a signature dish gets booked again and again. The Louisiana sales tax registration comes first here, because it is what lets you collect sales tax and buy inventory wholesale. Here is what we will cover: how to structure Smoked Out Meatz, the tax IDs it needs, and the licenses that let you open in Shreveport, then a quick recap.

A BBQ trailer in Louisiana counts as a mobile food unit, which generally means a food permit and an inspection of the trailer before you serve anyone, plus a sales tax registration, because plates sold to customers are taxable. Ask about a commissary or prep kitchen requirement, since many mobile units must operate from one. Your trailer is also a vehicle with its own registration and insurance, and event organizers usually want to see all of it. Smoke has a way of attracting neighbors, so check zoning where you park. Register the Smoked Out Meatz name as well, and keep each event's sales tallied.

What Smoked Out Meatz needs

  1. Louisiana sales tax registration – It lets you collect sales tax from customers and hand your suppliers a resale certificate, so wholesale purchases of inventory stay tax-free and properly documented.
  2. LLC (limited liability company) – Forming an LLC puts a legal wall between the business and your personal assets. If guests get food poisoning at a wedding you catered, an LLC helps keep that claim against the business. Once profits grow, an LLC can elect S corporation tax treatment, which can lower self-employment tax; ask a tax adviser when the numbers justify it.
  3. DBA (doing business as) registration – If you operate as a sole proprietor, or under a name different from your LLC's exact legal name, registering "Smoked Out Meatz" lets you use it on signs, invoices, and your business bank account.
  4. EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 1 employee, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.
  5. Louisiana employer ID – With 1 employee, you need a state employer account number for payroll withholding and unemployment insurance. It works like the EIN, but for state payroll taxes.
  6. Business license – A business license puts Smoked Out Meatz on the official map in Shreveport, which landlords, banks, and many customers will expect to see before they sign anything. Expect a health inspection of the kitchen, truck, or premises; renting time in a licensed commercial kitchen is a common way to start.
  7. Food permit and licensed kitchen – Most states require caterers to cook in a licensed commercial kitchen and hold a food permit.
  8. Food handler or manager certificate – Many states require food safety training for staff and a certified manager.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a catering business it is NAICS 722320 (Caterers). With 1 employee planned, you are already creating jobs in Shreveport. That makes 8 items on your list.

Tip: Use contracts with deposits, final headcount deadlines, and cancellation terms.

To recap: Smoked Out Meatz in Shreveport, LA needs a sales tax permit, an LLC, a DBA, an EIN, a state employer ID, a business license, food permit and licensed kitchen, and food handler or manager certificate. Check them off one by one and you will open with confidence.

We can file your seller's permit and the other registrations for you: start here.

Answer: Hi Erika, yes, Staring Your Business in San Marcos requires a business license for your Food in CA because it is a registration that all business are subject too since you may need an inspection for hygiene, i.e., health permit etc..

Your business name, "Kika Pika LLC" needs to be registered with LA Trade Name, an LLC or corporation because the public is entitled to know who is using the business name and at what location.

Finally, another license permit you need is the seller's permit Sales Tax license because selling Food products requires that you collect sales tax with each sale. For example, if you sell $100 of food, you will need to charge about
7.25% sales tax. The statewide tax rate is 7.25%. In most areas of California, local jurisdictions have added district taxes that increase the tax owed by a seller. Those district tax rates range from 0.10% to 1.00%. Some areas may have more than one district tax in effect.

REQUIRED PERMITS
Legal and Tax Business Structure

Whether your business is an online, home, store, concession stand or a mobile cart, you will have to first select from these business, tax entities: Namely, from sole owner/proprietor, partnership, LLC or corporation. It does not matter which one you choose when it comes to a General Business License because all entities need that one. (Note that that is not a specific license to your type of business it is a BUSINESS license) as well. Using a company name subjects you to having to file a DBA . For instance, your name is Marylin Boe, and you do business as Best Items By Marylin, the name must be registered with a DBA Doing Business As certificate because it is not your full legal name (namely, Marylin Boe). Also, note that whatever item that you sell or lease and it is an item that can be touched (i.e., tangible such as equipment, jewelry, merchandise, electronics, prepared food) requires a sales ID ( Sellers Permit ) to either buy or sell the items or products wholesale from companies that sell in bulk and or sell them retail directly to consumers. Getting people to work for you within 30 days of starting your business subjects you having to get a Federal EIN and a State EIN (employer identification number). On the other hand, you will also need a federal tax ID are: if you are a partnership, an independent contractor, and a corporation or an LLC . You can also obtain a federal tax ID as a sole proprietor and use it as a business tax ID in the place of a social security number. However, you will still need other filings, such as permits, a fictitious business name DBA, and tax IDs as described above. Finally, even sole proprietor working from home or just online can set up a LLC or incorporate, in which case, they will not need to register the trade name with a dba because the LLC or Corporation name will be the legal name of the business.

What licenses, permits and paperwork do I need to open a for-profit thrift and consignment store in Bridgeport, Connecticut, as a sole proprietor?
Answer by SellerPermit.com:
10/14/2026 7:15 AM

Start with a Connecticut sales and use tax permit. A thrift and consignment shop sells taxable goods to the public, so you must collect sales tax, and consigned items count as your sales too.

• Trade name: a DBA if you operate under a shop name as a sole proprietor, though an LLC would separate the shop's debts from your own.
• EIN: useful for banking and required once you hire anyone.
• Local business license and zoning approval for the Bridgeport storefront, plus any certificate of occupancy for the space.
• Written consignment agreements with each seller, spelling out the split and the holding period.
• Employer accounts for unemployment and withholding if you add staff.

Secondhand dealer rules sometimes apply to jewelry or electronics, so ask us before stocking those.

What do I need in Mississippi to buy wholesale as a sole proprietor and sell clothing online?
Answer by SellerPermit.com:
10/14/2026 7:15 AM

In Mississippi you would register for a sales tax permit. That registration is what lets you hand wholesalers a resale certificate, so you buy inventory without paying sales tax on it, and it also obliges you to collect tax on sales to Mississippi customers.

As a sole proprietor you can run under your own name, or file a DBA if you want a brand name on your website and invoices. Many wholesalers also ask for an EIN, which keeps your Social Security number off paperwork. Check whether your town wants a local privilege or business license even for a home-based online shop. If you will sell into other states in volume, you may owe sales tax registration there too. An LLC is optional but worth considering once sales grow, and we can file every piece of this for you.

I already hold a cosmetologist license and a contractor license. What are my next steps, and which licenses do I need to sell hair products to my clients?
Answer by SellerPermit.com:
10/14/2026 7:15 AM

Your cosmetology license covers the services you perform, but selling products is a separate matter. In Ohio you need a vendor's license, since you will be collecting sales tax on every bottle and tool sold to a client.

That same vendor's license lets you buy product from distributors using a resale certificate, so you stop paying tax at the wholesale counter. If you work from a salon booth, ask the owner whether sales run through their register or yours, because that decides whose license is used. Add an EIN, and an LLC or DBA if you want a brand name on your invoices. Your contractor license does not figure into retail, so unless you sell in a store you lease, a local business license is the only other piece. We can file the vendor's license and EIN for you.

TEXAS Sales & Use Tax Rate Changes Effective January 1, 2021

TEXAS Seller's permit

QUESTIONS?

(888) 995-8568 - 9am-5pm PST

The Texas state sales and use tax rate is 6.25%, but local taxing jurisdictions (cities, counties, special purpose districts, and transit authorities) may also impose sales and use tax up to 2% for a total maximum combined rate of 8.25%.

. Who is required to hold a Texas sales and use tax permit?
You must obtain a Texas sales and use tax permit if you are engaged in business in Texas and you:
  • sell tangible personal property in Texas;
  • lease tangible personal property in Texas; or
  • sell taxable services in Texas.
2. What is tangible personal property?
The statutory definition for "tangible personal property" is "personal property that can be seen, weighed, measured, felt, or touched or that is perceptible to the senses.
3. What is engaged in business?
A person or a retailer is engaged in business in Texas if any of the following criteria are met:
  • (A) maintains, occupies, or uses an office, place of distribution, sales or sample room, warehouse or storage place, or other place of business;
  • (B) has any representative, agent, salesperson, canvasser, or solicitor who operates in this state under the authority of the seller to sell, deliver, or take orders for any taxable items;
  • (C) promotes a flea market, trade day, or other event that involves sales of taxable items;
  • (D) uses independent salespersons in direct sales of taxable items;
  • (E) derives receipts from a rental or lease of tangible personal property that is located in this state;
  • (F) allows a franchisee or licensee to operate under its trade name if the franchisee or licensee is required to collect Texas sales or use tax; or
  • (G) conducts business in this state through employees, agents, or independent contractors.
  • The Texas state sales and use tax rate is 6.25% since 1990, but local taxing jurisdictions (cities, counties, special purpose districts, and transit authorities, but specifically not including school districts) may also impose sales and use taxes up to 2% for a total of 8.25%.The main items exempt from Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) include medicines (prescription and over-the-counter), food and food seeds (but prepared food, such as from a restaurant, is subject to Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) ).

    Motor vehicle and boat sales are taxed at only the 6.25% state rate; there is no local sales and use tax on these items. In addition, a motor vehicle or boat purchased outside the state is assessed a use tax at the same rate as one purchased inside the state. The Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) is calculated on the greater of either the actual purchase price or the "standard presumptive value" of the vehicle, as determined by the state, except for certain purchases (mainly purchases from licensed dealers or from auctions).

    Lodging rates are subject to a 6% rate at the state level, with local entities being allowed to charge additional amounts. For example, the city of Austin levies a 9% hotel/motel tax, bringing the total to 15%, trailing only Houston for the highest total lodging tax statewide, at 17%.Lodging for travelers on official government business is specifically exempt from tax but the traveler must submit an exemption form to the hotel/motel and provide proof of official status.

    If merchants file and pay their sales and use tax on time, they may subtract 1/2 percent of the tax collected as a discount, to encourage prompt payment and to compensate the merchant for collecting the tax from consumers for the state.

    Texas provides one Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) holiday per year (generally in August prior to the start of the school year, running from Friday to Sunday of the designated weekend). Clothing less than $100 (except for certain items, such as golf shoes) and school supplies are exempt from all Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) (state and local) on this one weekend only. There has also been talk of a tax free weekend in December to help with the Holiday shopping season.

  • 4. How do I get a permit?
    You can apply for a Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) permit using oursite here online.
    5. Is there a fee charged for a Texas sales and use tax permit?
    There is no fee for the Texas Sales and Use tax permit. However, based on your application, you could be required to post a security bond and we also charge you a fee $39 to help you file it.
    6. If I am no longer in business, can I keep my Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) permit?
    Your permit is valid only as long as you are actively engaged in business as a seller. If you are no longer conducting business, you should return your permit to the Comptroller for cancellation. Likewise, the Comptroller may cancel your permit if it finds that you are no longer engaged in business as a seller.
    7. Once I have obtained a Texas sales and use tax permit, what are my obligations as a permit holder?
    As a permit holder, you are required to
    • Post your permit at your place of business;
    • Collect Sales Tax (get Seller's Permit) on all taxable sales;
    • Pay sales and use tax on all taxable purchases;
    • Timely report and pay sales and use taxes; and
